Today is Memorial Day in the United States, a day to remember those members of the military who have died in service to our country. There are plenty of sources today this will give you the history of Memorial Day, so I’m not going to do that.

Instead I wanted to find one photo that most exemplified my feelings about Memorial Day. Most photos are of politicians and high level military officers giving speeches. But with patience and persistence, I found the photo below.

U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Tiffany Robinson, assigned to 449th Air Expeditionary Group, kneels in front of a battlefield cross following a Memorial Day ceremony at Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti, May 26, 2014. The cross was created with combat gear representing each of the five U.S. military branches, in commemoration of fallen service members.
